5 Fun Math Games to Play With Your 3-Year-Old at Home

At age three, children aren't ready for worksheets — but they're absolutely ready for numbers, as long as the numbers show up inside play. The goal at this age isn't memorizing digits; it's building "number sense": a felt understanding of more, less, same, and how counting connects to real objects.

Here are five low-prep games that fit into a normal afternoon.

1. Snack counting

Before handing over a snack, count the pieces together out loud — "one cracker, two crackers, three crackers." Then ask, "Can you give one to your teddy bear?" This turns a routine moment into a counting exercise without ever feeling like a lesson.

2. Stair counting

Count each step out loud while walking up or down stairs. The physical rhythm — one step, one number — helps children connect counting words to a sequence of real actions, which is a big part of learning to count accurately.

3. Sock sorting

Dump a basket of clean socks and ask your child to sort them into pairs, or by color. Sorting is one of the building blocks of math thinking, and it's a chore they can actually help with.

4. "Which has more?"

5. Shape hunts
